Career Conversations are panel discussions to help you explore career options and opportunities, even if you are still performing, have not performed in years, or considering changing career paths. All are welcome! Sessions are always free of charge!

Midcareer Moves
Tuesday, March 18th and April 22nd from 6:00-8:00pm

A new support group led by Career Counselor Anita Lands will deal with professional, personal, emotional and psychological transitions, as well as action steps and resources to move ahead.

This group meets monthly on Tuesdays from 6:00-8:00pm; including May 20th and June 17th; drop-ins and new members are always welcome. Please contact CTFD for an eligibility screening prior to attending your first meeting.

GRANT DEADLINES

APPLICATION DEADLINES:

Caroline H. Newhouse Foundation Scholarship Fund March 12; May 14; July 9; September 3; November 5.Limited funding for tuition, retraining or seed money central to fledgling business enterprises is available to current and former professional dancers who can demonstrate earning their livelihood from performing as dancers.  Grants of up to a total of $2000 for each individual may be awarded to dancers.  

PLEASE NOTE: Choreographing or teaching dance is not applicable for meeting eligibility requirements. 
For the Sono Osato Scholarship for Graduate Studies: 

March 28, 2008, 5:00 pm EST, only deadline date in 2008

NEWS AND UPDATES 

Jock Soto, Navajo native and former dancer with New York City Ballet will have his story told as part of PBS’s Independent Lens series on April 8, 2008.  “Water Flowing Together” is the name of the documentary, named after Soto’s Navajo clan and is the first cinematic work by Gwendolen Cates, author and photographer of Indian Country. Check your local listings for details.

VISUAL ARTS TEACHING ARTIST NEED

(scene design/costumes/puppetry)

Visual Art/Scenic Designer Teaching Artist Sought for After School Program Residency in East Harlem Elementary School Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-15- 4:45

Starts at the end of March (will accept resumes till March 15)

Qualifications:

  • Relevant teaching experience and background in visual arts/ scenic design/ puppetry/ costuming.
  • Passion for teaching
  • Able to handle a rowdy classroom with eager creative children
  • Great ideas for visual arts projects that will engage children
  • Ability to connect with kids
  • Ability to collaborate and work with other teaching artists and administrators
  • Experience in the Theater Arts a Major plus!
  • Able to commit till the end of the school year

The Teaching Artist will be responsible for teaching visual arts class twice a week and also helping the kids prepare for their end of the year show. This may entail the teaching artist to have a rudimentary knowledge of scene design, costuming, puppetry etc.

$150 for a session ( an hour and a half)

BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange is a 17 year old multi-faceted performing arts center located in Park Slope, Brooklyn that offers a range of services, including an annual presenting series, residencies for dance, experimental theater and performance artists, on-site educational programs in theater, performance art, and dance, and in-
school education programs at Brooklyn public schools. www.bax.org

We are seeking a full time Education Coordinator to work closely with Education Director, staff, faculty, students and families. Our educational programs include six days a week of dance and theater classes for tots – high school students, arts education programs in 4-6 Brooklyn public schools, educational festivals, workshops and a full day summer program in the performing arts for 4-14 year olds.

 

Responsibilities include:

Head Registrar
This responsibility includes maintaining registration procedures with the assistance of administrative assistants for all classes and workshops, tracking attendance, managing the after-school pick up program, administering the scholarship program, and communicating with the Operations Manager regarding outstanding tuition or special circumstances.

Liaison with Families & Faculty
A major player in serving the needs of students, families and faculty, the Education Coordinator will be the "voice and ears" of BAX. Interactions with families include registration, individual issues, placement in classes, behavior management etc. The Coordinator will also assist faculty with use of BAX's facilities and resources and communicate regularly regarding scheduling, performances, changes in environment or specific class. The Education Coordinator must also attend and participate in all faculty professional developments led by Education Director.

Logistical Planning for Year
Keeping, maintaining and updating a master calendar for all in-house and public school scheduling. This component also involves visiting schools where BAX has residencies and work in coordination with administrative members of public schools.

Event & Workshop Coordination

The Education Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all special education events including: open houses, student concerts, Youthworks, Teen Arts Conference and other educational events. This includes creating internal timelines, scheduling, contracting, and coordination with other departments.

Summer Program Supervisor

Facilitate smooth running of program which includes assisting summer staff in a wide variety of areas. Assist in hiring, training and ongoing supervision. Plan trips and manage logistics. Communicate with participants and families.

Position begins May 1, 2008, is 5 days a week (preferably Saturday being one of the days) approximately 9:00 a.m. – 5: 00 p.m. (with some seasonal adjustment and flexibility.) Some attendance outside regular hours at festivals and workshops required.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is a talented, enthusiastic, detail oriented and personable individual with knowledge/experience in dance or theater education. Candidates must be able to work independently, take initiative, and prioritize as well as be an excellent team player.

Some administrative office experience is required as well as a
comfort level around computer software programs such as Microsoft Word and using a database.

Salary low 30's with health benefits and paid vacation.

Germaine Goodson – Dancer, Teacher, Choreographer, Master Classeswww.germainegoodson.com Ms. Goodson was a principal dancer in the Broadway production of "Black and Blue," and was last seen on Broadway in Duke Ellington's "Play On." She was also an original cast member of the Paris, France production of "Black and Blue" featured as one of The Rhythm Queens as well as in an Off Broadway production of "Back in the Big Time" starring Harold Nicholas. In addition to her career as a tap dancer, audiences have seen her performances on television commercials, daytime soaps, primetime dramas and special TV programs. She has had several opportunities to perform in films, fashion extravaganzas, regional theatrical productions and with several famous dance companies.

Germaine Goodson

Ms. Goodson is one half of the fantastic tap dancing duo, known as The Rhythm Queens. She and her partner, Deborah Mitchell, have performed together, nationally and internationally for twenty-three fabulous years. They have toured with the legendary Cab Calloway and the Hi-Di-Ho Orchestra. Deborah Mitchell is also the Artistic Director of the New Jersey Tap Ensemble.

Ms. Goodson teaches at New Dance Group and Steps on Broadway in New York City. She also teaches master classes in tap and jazz for universities, dance studios, tap companies and for private classes both internationally and in the U.S. She has taught master classes and choreographed for the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, The Norwegian College of Dance in Oslo, and Dance Stage 8, in Saint Cyprian, France with legendary jazz master, Matt Mattox. She was also the Assistant choreographer for the Georgia Shakespeare Festival's production of "Shrew the Holiday Musical."
